Listening to a book

AndroidiOS

The whole-book position bar, skipping by chapter, bookmarks, a speed per book, and sleeping at the end of a chapter.

A book is often many files — one per chapter, or a few long parts — but the player treats it as one book. This applies to the books on your device (see Audiobooks on your device) and to books from a media server alike.

One bar for the whole book

The position bar and both times are the whole book's: twelve hours for a twelve-hour book, not the fifty minutes of the file playing. Drag it anywhere and it lands in the right place, in whichever file that is. The book's title joins the line under what is playing.

Previous and next move by chapter

In a book, next and previous step through its chapters, not only its files — a book of thirty chapters in one file is thirty presses, not one that leaves the book.

This is for books only. On a podcast, next is still the next episode.

Chapters and bookmarks

Under the artwork, Chapters lists the whole book's chapters with where each starts; tap one to go there. See Chapters, notes and transcripts.

Beside it, Bookmarks keeps places in the book you want to come back to:

A book with none says No bookmarks in this book yet.

A speed for each book

Each book plays at the speed you last listened to it at. Choose a speed while a book plays and that is the book's speed from then on; start another book and it plays at its own. Leave books for anything else and the speed you had before comes back, so a podcast is not left at the speed you read a thriller at.

Sleeping at the end of a chapter

The sleep timer offers End of chapter alongside its minutes. The chip says End of chapter for as long as it is waiting, and playback stops when the chapter does.
