Privacy policy

How Mediagg handles your data. Last updated 27 September 2026.

Mediagg is a media player for Android. It plays the music, podcasts and video on your device, on media servers you run yourself, and on the open web. There is no Mediagg account, and we run no server that receives your library, your listening or your settings.

What stays on your device

The app keeps what it needs in order to work, on the device:

Backups. Settings → Backup exports your library to a file, or on a schedule to a folder, that you choose. If Android's own device backup is switched on, Android may also copy the library and your settings to your Google account or to a new phone, under Google's terms. Media server passwords and access tokens are excluded from Android's backup and never leave the device that way. Export servers writes your servers to a file you choose, without their passwords.

Crash logs. When the app crashes it writes a summary of the failure to a file on the device, together with the app version, the system version and the device model. It is not sent anywhere. You can read and copy it under Settings → Diagnostics → Crash logs.

Reporting an issue. Report an issue opens a new issue on GitHub (github.com/m3ugoat/mediagg-releases) in your browser, with the app version, system version and device model filled in, and the time and summary of the most recent crash if there is one. Nothing is sent until you choose to submit it, and you can edit or delete any of it first. Issues on that repository are public, and GitHub's policies apply.

What leaves your device, and when

Your own media servers. Requests go directly from your device to the address you entered — Jellyfin, Emby, Plex, Audiobookshelf or a Subsonic-compatible server such as Navidrome. Nothing is proxied through us. The app reports what you play and how far you got to the same server, so it can resume and count plays. Signing in to Plex goes through plex.tv, which is how Plex finds your servers; Plex's policy applies to that.

Podcasts, streams, playlists and artwork. Feeds, episodes, streams, playlists and images are fetched from whoever hosts them, as a browser would. Those hosts see your IP address and their own policies apply.

Podcast search and charts. When you search for a podcast, your search terms go to the directory you are searching: Apple (iTunes), Podcast Index or hearthis.at — or all of them, if you search every directory. Browsing top podcasts asks Apple for its charts for the country and category you pick. These services may keep the request, your IP address and the time. Once you subscribe, the feed comes from whoever hosts it.

Live stream artwork. When a radio stream names the track it is playing but sends no picture, the app sends that track name to Apple's search to find cover art.

Lyrics. When the song you are playing has no lyrics of its own, the app asks LrcLib for them, sending the track title, artist, album and length. You can stop this in Settings → Playback → Source of lyrics → Only the file.

Providers on GitHub. A GitHub directory of playlists that you add under Add from providers is read from GitHub (github.com, api.github.com and raw.githubusercontent.com). GitHub sees your IP address and which repository is being read.

m3ugoat. If you add an m3ugoat server, the app signs in to it at the address you entered, and the server adds your device to its own device list.

Podcast synchronisation. Off unless you set it up. If you connect gpodder.net, another gpodder-compatible server, or a Nextcloud server with GPodder Sync, your podcast subscriptions and episode actions (such as what you played and how far) are sent to the account you signed in to.

Casting. Chromecast casting uses Google's Cast service, part of Google Play Services. DLNA and UPnP casting happens on your local network. Either way the device you cast to fetches the media itself — from where it is hosted, or from your phone over your network for a file stored on it.

Purchases. Mediagg is free to use. You can tip once, or support it every month; supporters can choose an alternative app icon and are shown a supporter badge. These purchases are made through Google Play, which handles the payment and your payment details — we never see them. Google Play tells the app which purchases your account has made, and the app keeps a record of your tips on the device. Google's policy applies to the payment.

This website. Opening the documentation or this policy from the app loads the page from mediagg.app, which is hosted on GitHub Pages.

Cookies

This website sets no cookies and carries no analytics. The app does not use cookies itself, though a media server or website you sign in to may set its own.

Children's privacy

Mediagg is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us and it will be removed.

Security

Because your library stays on your device, the protection that matters most is your device's own. For what does travel — server sign-ins, feed downloads — the app uses HTTPS wherever the other end offers it. It will also connect over plain HTTP to an address that only offers that, which is common for servers on a home network. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
