Reading a book

AndroidiOS

Opening an ebook from Audiobookshelf, turning through it, and making it read the way you like.

Mediagg reads books as well as playing them. The books come from Audiobookshelf — it is the one kind of server here that holds ebooks — and three formats open: EPUB, CBZ comics and PDF.

Open one from the server's Ebooks or Continue reading shelf. Anything else says so rather than opening a blank page: This app cannot open a … book.

Kept on the device

The first time a book is opened it is downloaded, and the copy on the device is used from then on — a book opened once opens again with the server switched off, or on a train. A download that fails part-way is not kept, so there is never half a book to open.

Turning through it

The book is shown one section at a time: a chapter of an EPUB, a page of a comic or a PDF.

Full screen

Full screen takes every bar away, the phone's own included, and leaves the page. A tap anywhere brings them back, and so does going back — back leaves full screen before it leaves the book. Turning the phone keeps you in full screen.

How this reads

How this reads, in the top bar, changes the look of an EPUB. Each choice applies to the page as you make it, and Done closes the sheet.

Your choices overrule the publisher's styling. A comic and a PDF are pictures, so there is no face or spacing to change and the button is not offered for them.

Where you got to

Your place is kept on the server, not in Mediagg. Every turn tells Audiobookshelf how far through the book you are, and opening it again starts from there — so a book read on your phone picks up where you left it on any other reader signed in to the same server.
